PSP BASICS - Layers Overview

There are a lot of tutorials online specifically dealing with layers and many other tutorials that assume a knowledge of them. They are extremely useful critters and placing each element of a design on a layer is an excellent habit to acquire. If you use layers, you have decidedly more control over the placement, color, depth and even existence of each and every element in your design.

For example, a simple button... place the text for the button on its own layer and save as a psp file before saving it as a gif file. Then, when you want a different text on the button, just open the psp file, delete the layer with the existing text and add a new layer with new text.

When making banner designs such as that at http://www.rootsweb.com/~seky/civilwar/wynn.html, placing each element on its own layer allows you to experiment with the placement of each until you achieve the exact look you are after.

You can also adjust the appearance and opacity of individual layers, using them to correct or alter overall coloring as in Lori's Color Correction with Layers Tutorial, listed below.

Basic Layer Techniques are addressed in our own MaMaT's PSP5 Basics - Getting Started with Layers as well as at these basic tutorials:

Some specific uses of layers are in the following PSP6 tutorials:
